In a seemingly odd twist of fate, the cure for one of the most dangerous superbugs (Clostridium difficile) seems to have been found: eating feces (this is not a joke). It turns out that patients with serious C. Diff infections that were fed feces from relatively healthy family members recovered completely in almost every case. This is astounding. Believe it or not, one researcher has put the feces into a pill form to give his patients.
Now this is not new (of course) to Chinese or Tibetan medicine. The older Materia Medicas list numerous types of feces from different animals that are used to cure different diseases. The most common one being from a type of flying squirrel. I wonder who the taster was for that chapter. Regardless, the emerging science surrounding the GI microbiome holds promise to bringing us more very important advances in curing a whole host of chronic diseases.
By the way, if you are a patient of ours, don’t worry, we aren’t sneaking feces into your herbs. If we use strange things (meaning not plant based) we always ask first : )
I can’t wait to see what booths go up at the Natural Products Expo next year.
